The limited first edition in a digipak comes with a bonus Blu-ray that includes a 52-minute documentary and the Dolby Atmos mix of the album audio.
"The Last Will and Testament" is a sort of concept album. A restless musical journey that, in some way, reflects my own relationship with music as a consumer," explains bandleader Mikael Åkerfeldt. "Here, I record something, there, I reject something. I both revere and hate music. This ambivalence leads me down my own creative path, and suddenly a collection of songs is written. Ideally, these songs are good enough to impress the band. Good enough for the 'powers that be' in the industry. Good enough for 'you'?! I love this album. I have to say (write) it. Maybe I'm even proud? I suppose there are some familiar elements in it. Most of our music comes from the same source, so it's probably no big surprise if it sounds like 'us.' I'm a little impressed with what we've done with 'The Last Will and Testament.' It feels like a dream. I hope there's some coherence and songwriting skills, but what do I know? I tend to prefer the 'strange' over the 'obvious,' but I feel like I'm in the minority, and that's okay. So... a warning! Don't expect an instant hit (as usual), but if you 'get it' right away (have you already got it?), that's okay too!"
